Dara Birnbaum

Born in New York, 1946

Video

Birnbaum most remarkable work: the video made in 1978 is a continuous repetition of some scenes of the TV Show Wonder Woman. Birnbaum choose the scenes in which Wonder Woman (played by Lynda Carter) transform from a human being/ office girl to a super powerful creature.

The meaning behind the repetitive action was to expose:

a. The illusion of fixed female identities in media and attempts to show the emergence of a new woman through use of technologies.

b.  A double identity without a space for a difference between the two of them.

Birnbaum as a feminist artist of the seventies uses the video screen as a way to criticise and somehow freer the feminine identity through technology. As a jumping in a few decades.
